Survey calendar for species and
habitat surveys
It is often the case that
surveys are required as part of the planning process. It is important to
consider the yearly cycle for survey work so that surveys can be completed
within what are often small time windows especially for great crested newts. It
is not uncommon for the need for protected species or habitat surveys to be
considered much later in the planning process by which time the window can have
passed and the project is delayed until the following season. The list below
shows the periods of time in which the most common surveys can be completed.
This list is indicative only and other factors such as weather conditions can
influence the timings of such surveys.

Habitat assessments
Note: Local Planning authorities may request Phase 1,
Extended Phase 1 (including protected species potential), or ecological /
biodiversity surveys as a means of gathering more information on a site. Basic
Phase 1 surveys can be conducted throughout the year although for more detailed
floral surveys these need to be conducted during the summer
months.
Bat
surveys
 Note: Searches for
evidence / potential for bats can be conducted throughout the year. For
activity surveys have to be conducted from May to
September.
Badger
surveys

Note: Surveys are possible throughout the year.
Care should be taken to ensure searches are done over the breeding period as
additional setts may be created during this time. Great crested newt surveys
 Note:
For presence / abscence, four surveys to be conducted on water bodies from
mid-March to mid-June with at least two of these between mid-April and mid-May.
For population size assessments (licensing), six
surveys required between mid-March to mid-June with at least three of these
between mid-April and mid-May. |
